About The Capitola Review

The idea for The Capitola Review was born from an appreciation of arts-and-letters reviews of the past—publications that seamlessly wove works of well-known artists and writers with those just entering the public realm.

The Dial, The Griffin, Harriet Monroe’s Poetry Magazine, and the collaborative spirit thriving at Celia Thaxter’s writers’ and artists’ salon on the Isles of Shoals served as vivid reminders of how creative expression through the arts can lift the human spirit.

In summer 2008, River Current Press was established as a nonprofit operation to publish The Capitola Review. Like Celia Thaxter’s salon, such an endeavor required kindred spirits. In short order The Capitola Review welcomed the talents of Erin Falligant, Mark Miskelly, Judith Lary, and more recently, Mike Kroll and Dion Kempthorne: friends who share an appreciation of the written word and visual expression and who are dedicated to pursuing works of significance and substance that pique the reader’s interest and “tickle the cosmic electrons.”

Since its debut, The Capitola Review has published notable works from regional and nationally recognized luminaries, including Lois R. Holland, Peter Beard, Caleb Mason, Margaret Rozga, Diana Johnston, Dean Wareham, Penny Jo Buckner, Bruce Rowe, Heidi Dyas-McBeth, Dave Etter,  Caleb Stone, Michael Perry, and William Faulkner, to name but a few.

Upon publication, The Capitola Review takes the experience “on the road,” and its traveling parlor has captivated audiences with presentations of poetry, music, and short fiction. Through this process, new voices enter the collective, and expression flourishes.
